Assisted Prison Visits

One of the problems with visits can be getting to the prison and the cost of travel. Some prisons, HMP Leicester for example, are located close to a city centre so there is plenty of public transport available even if car parking is at a premium, whilst others like HMP Gartree for example are purpose built sites in largely rural locations with infrequent bus services. Look at the individual prison pages and we have shown the bus routes and whatever other transport is appropriate. Some prison arrange a special bus service specifically for visitors from local town centres/railway stations.

If you are struggling with the cost of travel for a visit you could get some financial help if you’re aged over 18 and you are visiting a close relative or partner. You must be claiming a certain benefits such as Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance, Universal credit, Tax credits or Pension credit. To get this help you need to complete the correct forms and submit these for approval. There are guidance notes for applying and also a form if you are applying for another visit. There is also a special central unit to provide help:
