Visits & Getting there, HMP Swaleside

Visits are held daily between 14:00-16:00

You can book online by going to  www.gov.uk/prison-visits. All you need is the name and date of birth of the person you are visiting and their prisoner number. You can choose up to 3 possible dates and times. Prison booking staff will check what’s available and confirm your visit by email. If you’ve made an online visit booking request and haven’t received a confirmation email within 1-3 working days, email [email protected]

The Visitors Centre at the prison takes telephone booking 0300 060 6604. The booking line is open 09:00 – 12:00 & 12:30 – 16:00 seven days a week. All visits must be booked by 11:00 the previous day in advance at the latest.

Like at all prisons visitors will be required to provide proof of identification as follows: two forms of identification, one of which must be photo ID, with one or both showing the current home address. Acceptable forms of ID are as follows:

  • Passport
  • Driving Licence
  • Citizencard

All visitors will be required to enroll on the visitors registration system, prior to entering the establishment. Visitors will be limited as to what they are allowed to bring into the prison, £20 per adult visitor for the purpose of purchasing refreshments (notes or coins), baby requirements of food/nappies etc. A bag is provided for personal items not allowed into the prison which can be stored in a locker during the visits (£5 refundable deposit).

The visitors centre handle all property transactions. If the prisoner has been granted an application request for items to be brought in this will be handled by the visitors centre and a receipt given. All outgoing property will be collected by the visitor before the visit. The property will be sealed in a bag with a receipt attached for a signature by the recipient.

All visitors will pass through a metal detection point, and all bags and overcoats will be passed through an x-ray machine. All visitors will be subject to a rub down search. As at many prisons, there may well be drug detection dogs operating and visitors maybe subject to routine screening by these. 

Getting there

Bus services to the prison are irregular. There are services to the village of Eastchurch, which is about one mile from the prison. Arriva Buses 0870 608 2608 ( timetables click here) run a service from Sheerness Station and Chalkwell Coach Hire & Tours 01795 423982/3 (timetables click here)  from Sittingbourne and Sheerness.

By train from London Victoria to Sittingbourne (there are 2 trains per hour) and then a connecting train to Sheerness. Click here for timetables. There are taxis available from the station, which is about 8 miles away.

If travelling by car via the M20 leave at junction 7 and follow A249 (signposted to Sittingbourne and Sheerness). After 5 miles pass under the M2, staying on the A249 to Sittingbourne and Sheerness. If on the M2, exit at junction 5 and follow the A249 (signposted to Sittingbourne and Sheerness), and follow for about 5 miles over bridge onto the Isle of Sheppey. After about 2 miles you will come to roundabout. Take a right towards Minster and Eastchurch and continue for 4 miles to the next roundabout which bypasses Eastchurch Village. Take a right and follow the signposting for the prison.  There is car parking available at the prison.
