The Offending Behaviour Programme Group

Stafford delivers a number of accredited offending behaviour programmes, targeting the  needs of the prisoners at HMP Stafford. Accredited offending behaviour programmes are delivered.  These are:

  • Core Sex Offender Treatment Programme
  • Thinking Skills Programme.
  • Money management
  • Healthy living
  • Substance and alcohol awareness.

Drugs Strategy

Stafford Prison offers help for prisoners who have abused or continue to abuse drugs.  Group work and individual one to one work is available from the Drug and Alcohol Recovery Services. There is integrated drug treatment services that supplies detox and maintenance for clients on Methadone and Subotex.

Alcohol Strategy

One to one work and group work is available to prisoners who have problematic drinking that impacts upon their offending behaviour.  AA attend the prison to conduct support groups for clients.

CIAS (Careers Information and Advice)

Careers information and advice is delivered by a special team within Stafford. Mid-sentence reviews are carried out with prisoners to review  goals and offer help and support with research of employment and training opportunities pre-release.

Library

Library service is provided by Staffordshire Library and Information Service. Staffing consists of a full time supervisor post and a full time library assistant.  The opening times are Monday to Thursday – 0800- 1130  and 1400 hrs – 1630 , Friday  0800 -1130, Saturday  0900- 1130. Prisoners are timetabled to attend once per week from their workplace or, in the case of wing based prisoners, from their wing.  There are three groups and clubs which meet on a three weekly basis on a Saturday morning.  A flexible learning centre is available as a study centre for learners on flexible learning courses.  Learners can attend, by appointment, Monday to Friday. Storybook Dads project is operated from the library, employing editors in the afternoons Monday to Friday, recording and editing stories for prisoners at HMP Stafford and for other prisons in the region.

PE Department

The PE department is managed by 9 staff.  Facilities include a sports hall, fitness suites, weights rooms, classrooms, a treatment room and an excellent outdoor synthetic surfaced playing area.   There are a wide range of courses available including Get Fit for Life, Sports Injuries, CSLA, First Aid at Work, NOCN Weights and Active IQ.  Skills for life qualifications offered through Manchester College outreach programme. The Gymnasium offers resettlement opportunities to ROTL Prisoners through Cannock Chase Forestry Commission.

Catering

Led by a Catering Manager almost 40 people work in the kitchens. Pre-select menus are available to all Prisoners and all diets are catered for.   The department links with the Chaplaincy department to cater for religious festivals and celebrations.

Chaplaincy

Managed by a full-time Coordinating Chaplain, with a team of part-time and sessional chaplains working to support prisoners of all faiths.  A full provision of weekly services, study groups and meetings for faith groups are offered and a Living with Loss course is delivered, supporting those dealing with bereavement and loss. Pastoral support is offered to all prisoners across the establishment.  Facilities include an Ecumenical Chapel, a Mosque, a Multi-Faith Room and a small meeting room.  There is also a small team of official prison visitors who befriend prisoners.  There are links with community chaplaincies in the area.

Discipline

The Segregation Unit is located on D1 landing and contains 12 cells.

Prison shop/canteen

Almost 400 items are available with limited provision for vegans. Separate arrangements are in place for purchases by minority ethnic groups.

Medical Facilities

Healthcare is provided by South Staffordshire PCT. Cover is provided during the day and evenings, from Monday to Thursday, by a team of general and mental health nurses, support workers and administration staff. There is no in-patient facility. Commissioned services include part-time GPs, a mental health in-reach team, sexual health team, dental service, podiatry, optician and an IDTS service.  There are nurse-led interventions available in chronic disease monitoring and advice, primary mental health, smoking cessation, vaccination, Chlamydia screening and well man.
