The establishment, opened in 1953, is the oldest of the open prisons. It forms part of a two establishment cluster with HMP Grendon therapeutic prison which is situated on the same site.
Accommodation.
Accommodation is spread across 11 units.
- 9 huts (J to S) hold 22 prisoners in shared and single accommodation.
- Huts X and W each contain 40 rooms and have en suite facilities., Hut X is only operating at half capacity because of fire safety concerns.
- Hut W is used for those working outside the prison.
- Hut T is a 16-bed dedicated unit for prisoners with substance misuse support needs..
- All units have a communal lounge, kitchen, showers and separate toilets
