General Information, HMP Prescoed

HMP Prescoed is part of a combined prison known as HMP Usk/Prescoed. Prescoed is a male Cat D open prison, Usk is a closed Cat C operating on a site around 2 miles away. Prescoed opened in 1939 as an open borstal becoming a detention centre in 1964 and changed to an open youth custody centre in 1983. It became an open young offender institution in 1988, also taking category D adult males some years later. Since 2004, it has been exclusively an open prison for adult males. It us run by HMPS as part of the Wales region and has a capacity of 230, the #1 governor is call Giles Mason, who has been in post since April 2017.

Accommodation

10 residential units, all single room accommodation with the exception of the dedicated induction unit which has 10 double occupancy rooms. The hostel, which assists longer term prisoners to prepare for release, consists of 2 semi-detached houses that accommodate up to 8 prisoners.
