HMP Oakwood, near Featherstone in Staffordshire, opened in 2012 as the UK’s first prison built using modular, pre-fabricated construction techniques. Originally planned as part of a much larger “titan prison” scheme that was later scaled back, it is still one of the largest prisons in the country, privately run by G4S with a capacity of over 2,100 Category C men.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons rated Oakwood “good” for safety, respect, and purposeful activity following a 2024 inspection, with resettlement judged “reasonably good” — a strong set of results for a prison of this size. The Independent Monitoring Board’s most recent annual report recorded no self-inflicted deaths during the year, falling violence, and a 28% rise in one-to-one key worker sessions, alongside a notable increase in family contact hours. The main concerns raised were delays in transferring mentally unwell prisoners for specialist care beyond the intended 28-day limit, a rise in drug finds, and the challenge of supporting an estimated 900 neurodiverse prisoners with just one dedicated coordinator.

For families staying in touch with someone at Oakwood, the details above are the best way to arrange visits and stay informed about their wellbeing.
