Visits and getting to Highpoint

Social Visits are held :

  • Mon – 14:00-16:00 South Only
  • Fri – 14:30-16:30
  • Sat – 14:00-16:00
  • Sun – 09.00 – 11.00 South Only 14:00-16:00

No visits on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday or New Years day. Closed visits take place on weekday social visits only on South and any social visits session on North. Closed visits run for period of one hour. You can book a visit book online, visit: www.gov.uk/prison-visits. All you need is the name and date of birth of the person you are visiting and their prisoner number. You can choose up to 3 possible dates and times. Prison booking staff will check what’s available and confirm your visit by email.  If you’ve made an online visit booking request and haven’t received a confirmation email within 1-3 working days email [email protected] or call 01440 743134, lines open 08:00 and 14:00 Monday – Friday. If you book by email be sure to include the VO number, names of visitors, address for each visitor, date of birth along with the offender’s details together with date and time you wish to visit. Confirmation of the Booking will be made within 24hrs from the original e-mail.

Visitors must identify themselves using ONE of the following alongside ONE form of address detail – two separate forms of ID (please note a driver’s licence is not enough on its own). Passport, including foreign passports and time expired passports where the photograph is still recognisable. EC identity card, Photo card Driving Licence, Immigration photo card/Foreign Nationals Identity card, Senior Citizens public transport pass issued by Local Authority. Employers or Student ID card (only if this clearly shows the name of the visitor and the employer or educational establishment and has a photograph or signature that can be compared with the visitors` appearance or signature). If you are unable to produce any of the above, then staff will accept TWO or more of those listed below: Birth/ Marriage Certificate, Cheque book or credit/debit (counts as one do not accept as two), Employers pass or ID or student ID card not acceptable under vi above, Young persons “proof of age” card, Trade union or National Students Union membership card, Rent book, Foreign identity or residents card(other than EC ID cards acceptable in their own right), Expired documents from the above list that appear satisfactory in other ways.

There is a Visitors’ Centre where you should book in prior to your visit; ensure you bring the correct identification documents above! All personal property including hand-bags, smoking requisites and mobile phones etc must be stored in the lockers provided, which require a £1 coin which is refundable.

You can only take in £5.00 change per person for refreshments which are available for purchase from the vending machines in the visits hall. Any children’s paraphernalia such as nappies, bottles etc can be taken in but may be searched.

There is a play area in the South visits hall for prisoners’ children in the visits room, this is supervised and managed by the Ormiston Children and Family Trust, on North there is a small provision of toys and books.

Disabled visitors can access the visits facilities but may require some assistance.

HMP Highpoint is in a rural location, not best served by public transport links. It is situated on the A143 at Stradishall, which is approximately 7 miles from Haverhill when heading to Bury St. Edmunds. It is within 20 miles of the A14 to the north and the M11 to the west. For information of bus services click here http://www.suffolkonboard.com/mdv/journeyplanner There is also a coach service, which operates from the London area on Sundays only. Seats must be booked by phoning 020 8692 6636. There is no train station close by the prison. If you are travelling by rail you have four choices i.e. Cambridge; Newmarket; Bury St Edmunds and Audley End. These four stations are between 20 and 45 minutes from Highpoint.

By car:From London take junction 27 off M25 to M11, then take junction 9 off M11 to A11, followed by the A11 to A1307 for Haverhill.  At Haverhill take A143 towards Bury St Edmunds, Highpoint is approximately 6 miles along this road.   From the Midlandsuse the A14 to Bury St Edmunds.  At Bury St Edmunds take A143 to Haverhill, Highpoint is located 12 miles along A143. There is ample parking available.
