Work & Education at Exeter

Education is delivered in conjunction with Strode College, and is provided at the education centre and on an outreach basis. Courses offered are from Pre-entry Level numeracy and literacy through to Level 2 qualifications. The relatively brief time prisoners spend at Exeter makes vocational training difficult, what is offered is focused on increasing prisoners employability. All prisoners are assessed to determine their individual needs and learning levels. The courses currently offered are:

  • Numeracy
  • Literacy
  • IT
  • ESOL
  • Understanding Business
  • Men’s Health
  • Art
  • Tenancy Issues
  • Alcohol Awareness
  • Budgeting
  • Business Studies
  • British Institute of Cleaning Sciences (BICS)
  • Health and Safety
  • NVQ in Food Preparation and Cooking
  • Family Man/Fathers Inside

The work available is segregated between mainstream and vulnerable prisoners. All prisoners are required to undergo Health and Safety training before being allowed to work in the workshops. Up to 40 prisoners are employed daily in packing, light assembly, bespoke printing (merchandise, mugs umbrellas, t shirts etc.) and embroidery (t shirts, polo shirts etc.). Wages range from £7 to £9.50 per week. Hours worked are Monday – Friday, 9:00 -11:30 and Monday – Thursday 14:30 – 17:00.
