Visits & getting there, HMP Winchester

Visits are held daily between 14:00-16:00

You can book online, go to  www.gov.uk/prison-visits. All you need is the name and date of birth of the person you are visiting, their prisoner number and details of the visitors. You can choose up to 3 possible dates and times. Prison booking staff will check what’s available and confirm your visit by email. If you’ve made an online visit booking request and haven’t received a confirmation email within 1-3 working days, email [email protected].

You can also book visits by email at the address above, or by telephone. You need to give at least 24 hours notice. Call 0845 223 5514 between 08:15 – 12:15 & 14:00 – 16:00.

Remand prisoner visits last 45mins with 2 sessions in the afternoon, convicted visits last 1hr 30mins with 1 session each afternoon.

There is a visitors centre run by a charity ( Spurgeons) at the prison, click for details. and you should book in here for your visit. All visitors are required to present a form of photo ID when they arrive at HMP Winchester. If you are unable to do so, seek advice from the member of staff on the booking line before your visit. Like at all prisons, there are restriction on what you can take into the visits hall eg mobiles, cigarettes, food & drink etc and you can leave these in lockers at the visitors centre ( £1 deposit for a locker)

HMP Winchester is located a short distance from Winchester town centre up a fairly steep hill, opposite the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

A bus service (# 5) runs from the centre of the town and the train station regularly. Click here for details  Winchester train station is well served with frequent trains timetables  Taxis are available at the station or use the bus as highlighted above.

Parking near the prison is very difficult, and it may be sensible to use the “Park and Ride” The ‘South’ car park is located at M3 Junction 11 and has buses running into the city at least every 15 minutes. The buses stop very close to the Prison and visitors need to alight at the hospital stop.

If you do drive head for the town centre and follow the signs for the Hospital. The nearest car park is in the city centre which is about a 15 mins walk.
