HMP Isle of Wight, Visits & getting there

Visits are held at the same time on both sites as follows:

  • Monday 14:00-16:00
  • Wednesday 14:00-16:00
  • Friday 14:00-16:00
  • Saturday 14:00-16:00
  • Sunday 14:00-16:00

You can book visits online, go to www.gov.uk/prison-visits. All you need is the name and date of birth of the person you are visiting, their prisoner number and details of the visitors. You can choose up to 3 possible dates and times. Prison booking staff will check what’s available and confirm your visit by email. If you’ve made an online visit booking request and haven’t received a confirmation email within 3 working days, email [email protected] or call 01983 634218.

You can book your visit is you have a vsiting order  by e mailing the prison at  [email protected] or by phone on 01983 556573 between Mon – Fri 09:00 to 10:00 and 16:30 to 18:30 for the Albany site or on 01983 554037 between 13:30 – 16:30 weekdays for the Parkhurst site.

There is a visitor’s centre at Albany, but not one at the Parkhurst site. Like at all prisons you are not allowed to take items like mobile phones or cigarettes into the prison and lockers re provided for these to be left during your visit. You will be required to provide photo ID and proof of address, and you will be searched by prison staff before being admitted to the visits hall. You can buy snack and hot drinks during your visit, make sure you have enough change as large notes are not accepted.

The major hurdle to overcome is getting onto the Isle of Wight. During the holiday season the ferries are expensive and crowded. Passenger ferries run from Southampton, Portsmouth and Southsea, call or click

Don’t book your ferry crossing until your visit has been confirmed by the prison. When on the Isle of Wight buses run quite regularly click here or take a taxi 01983 811111, 0800 298 5421, 01983 244444, 01983 522968

If your using a car the roads are well sign posted to Newport and then to HMP Isle of Wight, from Fishbourne its approx. 7 miles and from East Cowes its approx. 6 miles. Parking for visitors to the different sites is available adjacent to each site.

You don't always get what you are entitled to unless you ask properly!
