HMP Channings Wood, Visits & getting there

Visits are held at the following times , weekend visiting days alternate between VPU and Mainstream prisoners.

  • Wed: 14:00 – 16:00 (Mixed – VPU and Main)
  • Fri: 14:00 – 16:00 (Mixed – VPU and Main)
  • Sat: 14:00 – 16:00 (VPU, week 1, Main week 2)
  • Sun: 14:00 – 16:00 (Main week 1, VPU week 2)

You can book online at www.gov.uk/prison-visits. All you need is the name and date of birth of the person you are visiting, their prisoner number and details of the visitors. You can choose up to 3 possible dates and times. Prison booking staff will check what’s available and confirm your visit by email. If you’ve made an online visit booking request and haven’t received a confirmation email within 3 working days, email [email protected]

You can book visits by emailing the prison at the address above, or call them on 01803 812060. Lines open 09:00 – 12:00 and 13:45 – 16:00 (except weekends and bank holidays).

There is a small visitors centre run by Choices Click here. or call 01803 814600 Ex: 4893. You should book in for your visit at the centre where there are a few lockers where you can leave items not allowed into the prison like mobile phones, cigarettes etc. Like at all prisons you will be searched before being allowed into the visits hall, you can take some money in with you, up to £20, to buy refreshments.

Family Visits – Each month there is an all day family visits are available for prisoners who are on enhanced status, run by Choices. These visits are for prisoners who have young children.

The nearest railway station is at Newton Abbot Click here about 3-4 miles away. Buses run midweek and Saturday from the bus station to the prison but aren’t that frequent (0800 9548975) click here There is a taxi rank outside of the railway station and one in the town centre. There are a number of taxi firms, call 01626 330 077 or 01626 331717

If driving from the North and East the M5 becomes A38 near Exeter and where the road divides into A38 Plymouth and A380 Torbay, take Torbay road. This will bring you to the outskirts of Newton Abbot (Penn Inn roundabout) – turn right at the roundabout to the town centre and follow signs to Totnes (A381). Pass through Newton Abbot on the Totnes road until you come to a roundabout next to a cemetery (about a mile outside of town). Turn right towards Denbury. Follow this road (quite narrow) for around two miles and you will pass the entrance to the prison driveway on your right hand side. From the west use A38 Plymouth to Exeter road. Turn right on A383 for Newton Abbot and pick up Totnes signs when entering Newton Abbot. Join the Newton Abbot to Totnes road (A381) by ASDA and continue until you come to a roundabout next to a cemetery (about a mile outside of town). Turn right towards Denbury. Follow this road (quite narrow) for around two miles and you will pass the entrance to the prison driveway on your right hand side.
