HMP Hewell, General Information

HMP Hewell was established in June 2008 following the amalgamation of three former prisons on the site – Blakenhurst, Brockhill and Hewell Grange. Each site catered for a different category of prisoner – categories B, C and D. In 2011, house block 7, the category C section (formerly Brockhill)), was closed. It now has a capacity for over 900 inmates.

The prison primarily serves the Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, West Midlands and Warwickshire catchment area and is part of the West Midlands Region. The #1 Governor, Ralph Lubkowski, was appointed in June 2020

Short description of residential units

The six house blocks have single and double cells, all with in-cell sanitation.

  • House block 1: general population
  • House block 2: early days centre, housing prisoners in their first two week in custody House block 3: general population
  • House block 4: well-being unit, and houses those in drug treatment and on the targeted care pathway
  • House block 5: prisoners convicted of sexual offences
  • House block 6: temporary segregation unit
  • Oak unit: targeted care pathway referral unit, for prisoners needing additional support to manage their behaviour
